Rat & Mouse Control for Chesapeake Homes
Rat and mouse control in Chesapeake is mostly work on detached, fairly new houses, and that decides where the rodents get in. U.S. Census Bureau estimates put 81.0% of the city’s housing units in single-family homes, with 29.0% built in 2000 or later and only 10.1% dating from before 1960.
New construction is no barrier on its own. Wherever brick meets siding, a pipe passes through a wall or a garage door closes against its frame, there is a joint that can open up, and our inspection works through those joints from the foundation to the roofline. The crawl space is part of it on every job.
South Norfolk is the exception. In the ZIP code area that covers much of South Norfolk, roughly one housing unit in eight predates 1940, five times the citywide share, so older foundations and framing take more of our time there.
Virginia Tech’s pest guidance names three pest rodents in the state: the house mouse, the Norway rat and the roof rat. Each needs its own plan:
- Mouse control for house mice in kitchens, garages and wall voids
- Rat control for Norway rats that burrow at ground level and roof rats that climb
- Rodent exclusion and proofing to close the gaps once the active rodents are dealt with
Sealing is what makes the result last. Virginia Tech warns that if rodents are killed but food and water are still available, “it is likely that new rodents will eventually move in to take their place.”
Signs You May Have a Rodent Problem
Droppings are the clearest sign of rodents, and their size tells you which one you have. Use this as a first check before you call:
| What you find | Most likely |
|---|---|
| Droppings 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, pointed, about the size of a grain of rice | House mouse |
| Droppings about 1/2 inch long | Roof rat |
| Droppings 3/4 to 1 inch long, blunt, about the size of a small raisin | Norway rat |
Sizes come from Cornell University’s IPM program and shapes from Penn State Extension.
Other signs point to where the activity is. Chewed food packaging and gnawed wiring are common, and UC IPM notes that rats gnaw the insulation on car engine wires, which matters if you park in the garage. Burrows along the foundation or under a woodpile point to Norway rats, while scratching overhead fits a climbing rodent in the attic or walls.
Leave droppings where they are for now. The CDC says not to sweep or vacuum rodent urine, droppings or nesting material, because that stirs them into the air.
Crawl Space Rodent Control
Crawl space rodent control deals with rats and mice living or traveling under your floor. We look under the house on every Chesapeake job, whether or not you have heard anything down there.
Norway rats are the usual suspects at this level. UC IPM describes them as burrowers that nest along building foundations and keep to basements and ground floors once inside. Under the house we check the foundation vents, the access door, plumbing and utility entries and the soil along the foundation for burrows.
Crawl space work has no fixed price; it is quoted once we have seen the space. Our crawl space rodent control service explains what the job covers.
Attic Rodent Removal
Attic rodent removal starts with working out what is overhead and how it reached the roof. UC IPM describes roof rats as “very agile climbers” that favor attic spaces, walls and false ceilings, and house mice climb well too.
The route up is often outside the house. UC IPM advises removing tree limbs within 6 feet of a roof, because they give rats and tree squirrels a path to the roof top and the soffit vents. Overhead, we check soffits, roofline returns, gable and attic vents and any branches touching the roof.
Attic work is also priced after inspection. Our attic rodent removal service explains how we clear and seal an attic.

- 01Inspect
We find every way in
A full walk-through, inside and out. We follow the runs, read the droppings, and mark every gap, vent, and gnaw-point on your home — because you can’t fix what you can’t see.
- 02Treat & seal
We remove them, then lock it down
Humane removal of the active population, paired with hardened exclusion work that seals the entry points for good. The problem leaves — and the door closes behind it.

FAQ
Rodent Control FAQs
Do you serve all of Chesapeake?
Yes. Chesapeake Rodent Control works only in Chesapeake, Virginia, from Great Bridge, Greenbrier and Western Branch to Deep Creek, South Norfolk and Portlock. We do not take jobs outside Chesapeake. Callbacks are free and come with no obligation to book, so you can describe what you are seeing and get a price before deciding.
Do you use bait or only traps?
We use both, depending on the job. For mice, we place humane traps and bait inside the home along the routes they travel. For rats, the treatment goes into burrows and nest sites, backed by bait stations outside. We take away every catch. The mix is decided after the inspection, once we know the species and where it is active.
How small a gap can a mouse or rat get through?
Smaller than most people expect. UC IPM treats any hole wider than a quarter inch as a way in for both rats and mice, and says a rat needs only half an inch of space under a door. So our inspection looks at the narrow gaps around pipes, cables and door bottoms as closely as the obvious holes.
Should I seal the holes myself before you arrive?
Not yet. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension advises against closing an opening until you know whether an animal is using it and a control plan is in place. That is the order we follow: we remove the active rodents first, then seal the entry points with hardened materials sized to each gap.
When can I reach you?
Our hours are 7am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday. Call (757) 551-3952 or request a free callback through the form on this page. A technician will ask what you have seen and heard, explain what the visit involves and confirm the price before anything is booked, so there are no surprises when we arrive.
